Firm knot 本結び

A secure and aesthetically pleasing knot often used in Furoshiki wrapping. Its durability and symmetry make it ideal for wrapping gifts or transporting items safely.

Steps

  1. Lay the fabric flat with the patterned side down, and place the gift in the center.
  2. Tuck in any excess fabric neatly.
  3. Bring two opposite corners together to tie the first knot.
  4. Cross the two corners and tie a simple overhand knot.
  5. Pull it tight enough to secure the gift.
  6. Take the same two ends and tie another overhand knot on top of the first one.
  7. Adjust the ends to ensure the knot is firm and symmetrical.

Bottle wrapping 瓶包み

Often used to wrap bottles like wine, this method makes them easier to carry while offering an elegant presentation.

Steps

  1. Place the bottle in the centre of the fabric. Bring two opposite corners together.
  2. Tie the corners twice to keep them out of the way as you work on the rest of the wrap.
  3. Spread the two remaining corners like “wings”.
  4. Take both wings, wrap them around the back of the bottle and bring them to the front.
  5. Tie a bow in the front. Adjust to ensure a symmetrical, elegant look.
  6. Untie the second knot of the first bow.
  7. Twist each end for the tighter wrap, then double-knot, leaving space for a handle.

Be creative and transform a large piece of fabric into a functional tote bag – a perfect alternative to disposable bags that highlights the versatility of furoshiki.

Steps

  1. Spread the fabric and place the items in the centre. (It’s best to use a large piece of fabric, as shown in the video.)
  2. Take two corners from the same side of the fabric and tie them in a knot.
  3. Repeat the same process on the opposite side.
  4. Take the two side-by-side ends and tie them in a knot.
  5. Repeat the same with the other two side-by-side ends.
  6. Adjust the handles for comfortable carrying.
