MUJI would like to encourage our customers to bring reusable bags when shopping with us. This will help to reduce the number of single-use carrier bags. Reusable bags are now available in-store.
MUJI has been working on the development of products within each region.
For example, all Essential Oils ranged by MEH are 100% pure and natural. They contain no chemical additives or synthetic fragrances.
The plastic boxes are fully recyclable. Paper labels are used on the boxes to ensure that they recycle easily too.
At MUJI UK, we are always thinking of ways to be more sustainable.
Customers can now return unwanted MUJI PP Drawers, PET Bottles & Skincare containers to our stores to be recycled. As a thank you, customers can receive a 10% Off voucher for their next purchase in-store.*
We are working with First Mile; a UK-based recycling company to help collect general waste, plastics and mixed recycling materials from our stores. This will allow us to have better transparency and traceability on how our waste is managed:

MUJI has provided opportunities for local small suppliers and artists to sell their products at our store. The space was free of charge and suppliers kept 100% of their sales. MUJI’s aim is to continue to help and support the local community and economy through the MUJI Community Market.

Over the past years, we have made donations to hospitals, children charities and environmental protection charities in Europe. In 2020 when COVID pandemic hit most countries, we made donations to healthcare services and hospitals to support frontline health and social care workers. For example in Spain, we donated MUJI sofa benches and they are now being used at a hospital's staff room.
We continue to strive to serve and act for the the local community.
MUJI Germany has partnered with DIM, a Berlin-based welfare project for the blind and visually impaired. DIM’s main project partner started as a brush manufacturing factory, established in 1902 with mission to provide jobs and social opportunities for people with disabilities. In the 1990s, the factory almost went bankrupt, but was later saved by two designers. Since then, DIM has expanded their range and have been offering various types of creatively designed products, which have been loved and supported by local customers.
At MUJI Berlin Ku’damm, you can find DIM’s products and enjoy face to face communication with those who work there.

When we launched the local food project, we decided to offer customers home delivery as an additional service. As we are located on one of the busiest shopping streets, this home delivery is convenient and allows the customer to carry on with their day without carrying around their groceries.
Home delivery can be booked through as staff member who will organise BICI COURIER to deliver the groceries at the customers desired time slot. The courier will use a bicycle, helping reduce Milan’s pollution, which is of fundamental importance.
MUJI’s collaboration with the Dynamo Camp Onlus Foundation offers Recreational Therapy programs to children and adolescents suffering from chronic diseases.
Dynamo camp also offers Oasi Dynamo, which is a program of environmental conservation taught through agricultural and forestry activities. The environmental tourism activity teaches elements of sustainability of the ecosystem a few kilometres from the centre of gravity between Lucca, Pistoia, Florence and Bologna.
Oasi Dynamo, aims to market quality food products from the surrounding area located in a natural 900 hectares in Tuscany which is affiliated with WWF. Through the marketing of these foods, Dynamo’s current and future social affluence is contributed to.
In the Corso Buenos Aires store we have made available a distributor of water so that all customers are able to fill their own bottles of water, reducing and avoiding plastic waste.
In addition to MUJI products, MUJI France provides regional products to our customers.
MUJI collaborates with suppliers who have the same values as MUJI: benevolence, sincerity and involvement. Our partner suppliers manufacture their products by carefully choosing the ingredients from nearby areas in order to promote short circuits, but also for their manufacturing quality, by favouring traditional production methods and also those which are environmentally friendly.
At Corso Buenos Aires in Milan, in Italy, MUJI has opened a whole area dedicated to Italian food-and-wine excellences.
MUJI has always focused on their quality of products and has searched to find a series of high level, small Italian producers who share a similar view of offering extraordinarily high-quality products which are respectful of nature, farming, breeding and processing techniques, strongly aligned with MUJI's philosophy.
A tailor-made selection of wine, oil, cheese, salami, pasta, rice, and sauces represents the excellence of this sector as well as of local producers and Italy's food-and wine traditions.
With MUJI's philosophy, each store promotes local producers and their stories. Behind each local producer there is a story of passion, love and respect of the best Italian food traditions.At the CBA store, you will find more than 50 local producers, providing the best food-and-wine, which are constantly evolving with new fantastic new entries.
Local Food includes a selection of food delicacies from 55 Finnish producers. The chosen products represent Finnish food specialities and producers’ passion for Finnish food.
Large part of the Local Food selection is only available at MUJI Kamppi where the products are delivered directly from the producer.
In the store MUJI Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, Spain, we have opened a new area with local food. The suppliers that collaborate with MUJI are small local producers, family businesses with a mission to develop sustainable and local products. Their goal is to develop and maintain local heritage and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.
All products are of the highest quality, natural and organic. You can choose from traditional products from Catalonia and Spain to products made with local ingredients but inspired by the Japanese tradition. Each one of them is made with a lot of dedication from the smallest detail, not only in terms of ingredients but also in terms of design and sustainability of the packaging. There is no doubt that the whole selection of local products fits perfectly with the MUJI philosophy and that this is only the beginning of this collaboration.
MUJI Finland is committed to supporting farmers in suburbs of Helsinki and to expanding their market and sales points.
Every Thursday at MUJI Kamppi, between 11am and 6pm, you will find Uudenmaan ruoka foodhub, and at MUJI Ravintola, you can pick up pre orders every Thursday, 12am to 6pm. Uudenmaan ruoka is a distribution centre of local and seasonal food produce.
Choosing producers from the surrounding area has reduced the journey of food going from field to table. You will find a variety of local and seasonal produce at the foodhub where products change naturally according to the season.
At Foodhub, you can pre-order products from here and pick up your order from MUJI Kamppi. You will also find members and producers of Uudenmaan Ruoka located at the MUJI local food store every Thursday.
MUJI ILLUM Copenhagen is one of our most eco-friendly stores in Europe to date. The store is partially made from reclaimed wood coming from multiple locations in Denmark. The timber was salvaged from the demolition of an old national hospital building (rigshospitalet), which was originally built in 1910 in central Copenhagen not far from ILLUM. Some other reclaimed wood came from an old Carlsberg factory, located just outside of Copenhagen, and also from Kastrup airport. MUJI upcycled the wood and used it as part of the store design.
TeaHouse counter will be clad with a bespoke basket weave material. The basket weave is a traditional technique used in Denmark to make small hard weaving products. It uses young willow tree ’whips’ that are first soaked in water to make them very pliable and then woven into shapes. As the willow dries, it becomes stronger. The basket weave is made by a local artisan and she weaved all the material by hand on site at ILLUM from the 28th September onwards.
A lot of the walls at MUJI ILLUM Copenhagen store are finished in a specialist Eco plaster. It is made from 100% recycled ingredients (a bio-product of the rice industry in Italy) and the artisan researched traditional Japanese installation techniques to ensure the movement in the plaster is authentic.
As part of the new store opening celebration, MUJI has partnered with the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon to work with the young artists and designers of the future. This educational partnership takes the form of a drawing competition for My Bag, MUJI’s iconic plain cotton tote bag without a pattern.
The drawing competition theme given to the students is "A Pleasant Life", one of the key concepts of MUJI. The projects will be displayed in the store for a month, after which two projects will be rewarded through a MUJI prize and a public prize, which will be chosen by the votes of the customers. The two winning work will be printed 500 bags each and will be sold in stores.
In the local food department of Corso Buenos Aires, Milan, you can find the panettone of Pasticceria Giotto. Since 2005, this panettone has been produced at the Padua Due Palazzi prison where inmates are led by chefs to make the famous traditional Christmas cake.
This creates the opportunity for inmates to learn a profession which they are able to follow once they leave prison. In some cases, some detainees have even managed to open their own businesses. Also, despite a global reoffence rate of 75%, following this program there was a very low rate of reoffence of around 5%.
A toy capsule, a universal shape that embodies joy and excitement, is moving around the city with people in it. From such an image, the design of the GACHA shuttle bus was born.
GACHA, with a digital map and sensing technology, is a “self-driving” bus that functions under all-weather conditions, such as heavy rain, fog, and snow.
MUJI, proposing "A pleasant life" in multiple countries and regions of the world, is participating in this project as a design partner.
MUJI has always strived to support and encourage young talents.
As part of MUJI Kamppi Helsinki store’s one year anniversary celebration, MUJI Finland held a design competition for students and young creatives. The theme of the competition was coffee, which is very important for Finns, coffee plays a good part of everyday life and celebration.
Three winners were chosen. The winners work were printed on MUJI’s tote bag and sold at MUJI Kamppi store.
